because misspelling my favorite berry felt like the right amount of effort

Reclaiming a song… no, wait, never mind

My ex made a mixed tape for his extracurricular for her birthday. I had no idea at the time, but she’d made one for him in return. The songs they’d picked for each other were, upon reflection, very telling. I had no idea at the time anything was going on, and I wouldn’t for another 6 months.

Tonight, I was out buying groceries when I heard one of those songs. I hadn’t heard it in a long time, and in the past I’d actively avoided it. Being in a grocery store, I was unable to avoid it (I forgot my AirPods). I was hearing the middle of it, so I had a thought of trying to “get over” this particular song. I made a pact with myself that I’d call it up on my music app once I made it back to my car.

I made it to my car, called up the song, and prepared myself to listen to the whole thing. Then, I heard the first few lines….

Beauty queen of only 18
She had some trouble with herself
He was always there to help her
She always belonged to someone else

I drove for miles and miles
And wound up at your door
I’ve had you so many times
But somehow, I want more

I’m completely fine with continuing to give this song (and Maroon 5) a pass.
