Don’t Look Up

Lots of my online friends enjoyed this movie and are raving about how good it is. I did not enjoy it. Warning: I can find no way to talk about why you shouldn’t watch this movie without revealing a few spoilers.

I went in excited about it, after seeing the cast list and watching the trailer. But, I ended the movie with way more than I bargained for. Things this movie gave me:

  • Lots of anxiety
  • Insomnia for 2 nights in a row
  • The desire to run as fast as I could in the other direction from any other movie that might even remotely talk about an end of the world scenario.

I prefer movies that take you out of reality instead of showing you something that pulls so many parallels from real life that your brain cannot help but think that this might actually be possible.

The whole time I was watching this, I kept finding moments to have hope. And, I clung onto it for dear life. But, there is no hope to be had. In short, the scientists find the comet very early on, tell the government about it, but capitalism takes over and, instead of saving the planet, the government decides to send robots to mine the comet for precious and valuable metals. This fails and causes the destruction of the entire planet.

The possibility of being rich makes people ignore things that, without it, would logically make sense to do. This is why I couldn’t enjoy the movie. I could not get over how money made people so unbelievably blind to the imminent doom the planet faced.

While we’re on the subject, here are some more movies that gave me the same kind of end-of-the-world anxiety:
