Unrequited

“If someone wants to be a part of your life, they’ll make the effort.”

“Actions speak louder than words.”

These quotes make me consider… how many relationships am I in where I’m putting forth all the effort, where I’m the one ‘doing’ instead of just ‘saying’? Relationships should be about both people making an effort. Otherwise, it’s not a relationship. This goes for friends, lovers, family, work, every connection you have with another person.

Disclaimer: This post is not aimed at any one person in my life. I’m grateful to have the friends and family that I have. I feel very lucky to be able to spend my time with people who care for me as much as I care for them.

But, If you’re like me, you have at least one person in your life that you have tried and tried to connect with. And while that connection may happen occasionally, it’s healthy to rethink your relationship with that person (or that group) and decide for yourself if it’s worth continuing.

Are you putting in all the effort? If so, then you’re forcing the connection, and that can be a source of stress. It can be disheartening and draining to continue. In the same breath, it can be painful to think of letting that person or group go, but you have to decide for yourself if it is or is not worth it any longer. Odds are, you’re pushing on a relationship that’s not healthy anyway. Take that effort, that energy, that love, and put it towards someone who wants to be part of your life.
